Black Boy Joy

Below are my current top 5 picture books with strong Black lead. These books are listed in no particular order and have been long time favorites in our home.

This is a board book and geared towards the younger ages 0-3. It was recently featured on the Netflix show Bookmarks being read by Jill Scott. The book centers Black beauty and features. There is also a baby safe mirror 🪞 in the back to reflect your child’s joy.

This is a book that I frequent recommend for families expecting another child. This endearing tale follows a young boy who struggling with accepting all the change and loss that comes with expecting a baby sister. This timeless tale covers the following themes: holds space for big feelings, growing older, and accepting change.

Basically I Stan for Vashti Harrison. I have all of her books and I love 🖤 her illustrations. This book is a a collection of famous Black men, from John Lewis, Arturo Schomburg, James Baldwin and so many more. Sometimes my daughter chooses a name from the table of contents, other times the reading is an extension activity from her homework.

This story captures my attention for its short, simple prose and constant positive affirmations. Although the subtitle has blessings, it is not specifically Christian story. The author is Delois Jordan, mother of Micheal Jordan 🏀. This is a great bedtime story that speaks love and kindness into your child’s spirit.

This book is based on the song by the same name. The classic spiritual has been transformed into a picture book. The warm images of family and community allows for a joyful celebration of love, faith, and hope.
